WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO USE MY OWN INSURANCE IF I WASN’T AT FAULT FOR A CRASH?
WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO USE MY OWN INSURANCE IF I WASN’T AT FAULT FOR A CRASH?
The question we ask most often in response to this question is:
“Why pay your insurance premiums for years to have coverage available that you aren’t willing to use when you need it?”
Sure, insurance generally is a necessary evil when viewed through certain eyes.
However, it is an incredible resource to have when you need it most. Unfortunately, we see and talk to many injured people who don’t have insurance and, when they are hit by an uninsured person, there is often no avenue of recovery for us to try and help them. Those circumstances are heartbreaking.
WHY WOULDN’T YOU USE YOUR OWN INSURANCE COVERAGE?
So, when you do have critical insurance coverages available to you through your own insurance and the circumstances are such that it makes sense for you to use your own insurance coverages, why wouldn’t you?!?
Generally speaking, after an injury occurs, the injured person bears the up-front cost of medical expenses and the injured person’s own insurance is (hopefully) available to pay for that treatment.
SUBMITTING CLAIM TO INSURANCE COMPANY
It is absolutely frustrating that you might need to submit claims to your own insurance company when you were not at fault for what happened. The fear of your future insurance premiums raising is a legitimate concern that we have addressed on this blog before.
Whether or not you should or can even trust your own insurance company is a whole other question.
And, you may even have to pay back amounts that your own insurance company pays on your behalf when your claims ultimately resolve, depending on the circumstances.
All of these are fair and legitimate questions and concerns you might have and, while we may agree with you that it’s not fair you’ve been put in the position where you have to ask these questions by the person that injured you, it does not change the answer. You should look at your declarations page to see what coverages you have access to and take advantage of the coverages you have paid for over the years when in need of them.
